Birdsong House Sign

‘A FLASH OF HARMLESS LIGHTNING, a mist of rainbow dyes, The burnished sunbeams brightening, from flower to flower he flies.’ John Banister Tabb

Who doesn’t know and love the ruby-throated hummingbird? These brilliant, iridescent little visitors that glitter in the sunshine, appear and then just as suddenly disappear, searching out the next source of nectar. With their unique ability to fly straight and fast, but then stop instantly and hover, adusting their position with incredible precision, even upside down and backwards, they are able to pluck tiny insects from midair or from spider webs, and position themselves at feeders and tube-shaped flowers. Living in forest edges, meadows, parks, open woodlands and gardens, these birds are the smallest bird species that breed in the eastern United States and Canada, measuring from 2 4/4” to 3 ½” long, with a 3 – 4” wingspan, and weighing all of 1/10 of an ounce. All the more amazing to think that these feisty little characters migrate to Central America, Mexico and as far as the West Indies every year, many crossing the Gulf of Mexico in a single flight – a nonstop journey of 600 miles.

Hummingbirds have an amazing metabolism, with a heart rate up to 1260 beats per minute, and breathing rate of around 250 breaths per minute, even when resting, and beating their wings 53 times a second. Not surprising then that they need to eat twice their body weight in food every day.

The hummingbird on this handsome little house sign was hand sculpted and painted, with the text and accents hand carved and gilded with 23kt gold leaf.
