44 West Property Sign

WHAT IS IT ABOUT A FOX that so captures people’s imagination? Since the time of the ancient Greeks, many paintings, poems and stories have been created about the fox in children’s tales like Aesop’s fables, B’rer Fox, Jemima Puddleduck, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Boy – and almost universally he is portrayed as the crafty, untrustworthy villain of legends and folk tales. (In Japan, he takes on magical qualities such as a shifter of shapes.) Interesting to note that this portrayal is pretty much worldwide, and the English language has both a noun and an adjective which derive from the animal’s name, with these same connotations connected to them. There must be some reason for this widespread stereotype, but it’s probably time to give the humble fox another chance. In fact, the fox is one of the more popular choices on farm and property signs, although you would think that farmers wouldn’t be so fond of them. And if you read some of the thousands of poems that have been written about foxes, it’s obvious that people are captivated by the fox’s beauty and a certain mystique about him.

In this case, there is nothing too mysterious about this tippling fox gentleman. Hand sculpted and painted, he stands out on this property sign. The text and border groove are hand carved and gilded with 23kt gold leaf.
