Groundhog Welcome Sign

‘ALL WE WHO PREFER to live have a little whistle we give, And flash, at the least alarm, we dive down under the farm. We allow some time for guile and don't come out for a while either to eat or drink. We take occasion to think. And if after the hunt goes past and the double-barreled blast (Like war and pestilence and the loss of common sense), If I can with confidence say that still for another day, Or even another year, I will be there for you, my dear, It will be because, though small as measured against the All, I have been so instinctively thorough about my crevice and burrow.’ Robert Frost, from ‘A Drumlin Woodchuck’

Woodchucks, also known as groundhogs and whistle pigs (named after the high-pitched whistle used to warn a colony of danger) are the largest member of the squirrel / marmot family. The name ‘woodchuck’ has nothing to do with wood or ‘chucking’, but stems from the Algongquian name for the animal – ‘wuchak’. Although they are undeniably a bane to farmers and gardeners alike (digging tunnels up to 45 feet long with multiple entrances and making full use of garden produce), these familiar and often maligned creatures are actually lovable little fellows for the fortunate few who get to know one personally.

In Oxford, Michigan, this friendly little welcome sign hangs, in memory of a special woodchuck named Bob. Though he never achieved the fame of some of the better-known members of his species (Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, Wiarton Willie and Jimmy the Groundhog in Ontario, Smith Lake Jake in Alabama and General Beauregard Lee in Georgia), he was nevertheless well-known and much-loved by the Johnson family who knew him for seven unforgettable years.

Pictured with one of his favorite apple snacks, the dimensional artwork on this sign was hand sculpted and painted. Text was incise carved using hand chisels and gilded with 23kt gold leaf.

  • Oh my gosh! He is fabulous! I put him on the porch entry, so I can smile looking at him each day! Thank you so much for taking the time to create a sign that means so much to me! That little groundhog was such a part of our lives for seven years and this is a very special tribute. These little creatures teach us so much! Thank you again.
