McKelvie's Frog Hollow Animal Sign

“BE KIND AND TENDER to the Frog, And do not call him names, As 'Slimy skin,' or 'Polly-wog,' or likewise 'Ugly James,' Or 'Gap-a-grin,' or 'Toad-gone-wrong,' or 'Bill Bandy-knees': The Frog is justly sensitive to epithets like these. No animal will more repay a treatment kind and fair; At least so lonely people say who keep a frog (and, by the way, they are extremely rare).” Hilaire Belloc

There is something about frogs that people seem to find fascinating, and they have been included in much folklore and literature over the centuries: Brer Bull Frog in Joel Chandler Harris’ ‘Tales of Uncle Remus’, Arnold Lobel’s ‘Frog and Toad’ stories, Grandfather Frog and Old Mr. Toad in Thornton Burgess’ ‘Bedtime Stories’, Jeremy Fisher in ‘The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher’ by Beatrix Potter, Mr. Toad in Kenneth Graham’s ‘Wind in the Willows’, Bunda the Marsh Frog in ‘The Kine Saga’ by A.R. Lloyd, Mark Twains’ Dan’l Webster in ‘The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, to name only a few. Well known tales such as ‘The Frog Prince’ center around the theme of transformation between frogs and people through magic spells. And a host of myths and ancient beliefs surround the humble frog; for instance, that physical contact with a frog can cause warts (not true). Ancient Egyptians held the frog as a symbol of fertility, since millions were born after the annual flooding of the Nile, which brought fertility to the otherwise barren land. Following this, mythology created a frog-goddess called Heget, who represented fertility. Rome and Greece associated the frog with similar qualities, while China believed the Frog spirit Ch’ing Sheng was endowed with the power of bestowing healing and good fortune in business. It’s a fascinating topic – one could start quoting frog proverbs as well, but enough on that for now.
