THE HAFLINGER (also known as Avelignese) is a breed of horse (and not to be confused with J.R.R. Tolkien’s halflings or hobbits!) originally from the town of Hafling in the South Tyrol Mountains in Austria and northern Italy in the late 1800’s. In fact, more specifically, they can be traced back to the year 1874 when a stallion called Folie was born – son of an Arabian stallion and a mare from a Tyrolean indigenous mountain breed. Haflingers ever since have been known for their hardiness and sure footedness (especially useful in mountainous terrains), as well as for their calm temperament and their friendliness, especially with children. Used both as work horses and for recreation, these all round horses excel as eager helpers, working together with humans. They are always chestnut colored (ranging in shade from light gold to liver color, with white or flaxen main and tail), with a distinctive gait, muscular and still graceful, with an elegant look.

During the world wars, the great depression, and into the post-war years, Haflingers came close to extinction due to lack of quality breeding. Later, interest was renewed, and now there are breeding farms in several countries, though the main stock still comes from Austria. As of 2005, there were almost 250,000 Haflingers in over 60 countries around the world.

The Haflinger (and cat) shown here are hand sculpted and painted, while the main text is carved and gilded with 23kt gold.
