The Woodwind Group Sign

“I DO NOT CONSIDER myself as having mastered the flute, but I get a real kick out of trying.” James Galway

In fact, James Galway is one of the world class performers who have appeared at The Woodwind Group in Leichhardt, Sydney. This internationally renowned workshop includes the widest range of fine flutes in Australia, from student to professional brands, as well as other woodwind instruments – oboes, bassoons, clarinets, saxophones and recorders. These folks are among only a small handful of fully qualified specialists in instrument making and repair, both wood and metal, with customers in many major orchestras from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand.

A look through their website is a fascinating tour of some incredible instruments – super bass flutes (or something) in large sizes that most of us probably don’t know exist! It’s also fun to see the wide range in age and ability – and to see the same attention given to the beginner as to the career musician. Not only a workshop, but a venue for concerts, this is a very interesting place that is well worth checking out.

When the Woodwind Group asked Danthonia to make them a handcrafted sign, they were looking for a classic look. Using their already distinctive logo, we rendered it as a hand sculpted dimensional add on, gilded with 23kt gold leaf. The smaller text and groove border were incise carved using hand chisels and gilded as well. The sign is made of high density urethane (HDU) – a completely waterproof material with the same density, weight and feel as wood, but much longer durability in all weather.
