St. Peters Catholic Church Sign

ST PETER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH is located on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, Sydney. Established back in 1880 for the area’s predominantly Irish population, this is a lively congregation with committed members who take an active part in many activities both on Sunday and throughout the week – in the church an d in the wider community. A mix of older people and young families, as well as young single adults, makes for an inter-generational experience that is so important and yet is sadly not so often found these days. In fact, if you go by the church after mass on a Sunday, you’ll see the children playing games and sports outside. More organized sports are indoor soccer (the highlight is the annual Cardinal’s Cup game) and cricket (St. Peter’s team plays every Saturday in the summer months.)

The church is active in other areas as well, such as the arts. Artes Christi is an association aimed at supporting Christian artistic endeavors in the visual, musical and dramatic arts. Petershill is another intership program reaching out to young people who apply to live on the Surry Hills property. Family Life International, Missionaries of Charity, a soup kitchen and other outreach programs for younger children, are all part of the church’s acrivities.

We made the upper dimensional section of the sign shown on this photo. The main text was hand carved and gilded with 23kt gold leaf, while the coat of arms was hand sculpted and painted with artist’s acrylics. Accents and small subtext were carved as well, and painted with Dulux Weathershield UV-resistant paints.
