The Mount Academy Sign

“HE CLASPS THE CRAG with crooked hands; Close to the sun in lonely lands, Ring'd with the azure world, he stands. The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls; He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.” Alfred Tennyson

It was fitting for the students at the Mount Academy in Esopus, New York to choose the bald eagle for their mascot since their school is perched right beside the Hudson River, where the majestic sight of soaring eagles is a common occurrence. The only eagle that is unique to North America, this bird is easily recognizable with its pure white head and tail, and its soaring flight.

The academy was established here in 2012, when the Redemptorist missionary order transferred use of the seminary property (then known as Mount St. Alphonsus) to the Bruderhof communities as an educational center. The large and striking stone building (built between 1904 and 1907) has been preserved and carefully restored, including its chapel and pipe organ. Classrooms, brand new Chemistry lab, theater and library, as well as extensive playing fields are all part of the newly refurbished school and grounds. Here , the students have the chance to take part in a wide variety of activities such as envirothon team, woodworking, science Olympiad, social service, forestry and conservation, cooking, journalism, and construction to name just a few.

In choosing a design for their school, the inclusion of a bald eagle was the natural choice. It was rendered as a hand sculpted dimensional add on, with hand carved and gilded letters.
