The Southport School Sign

“THE FUNCTION of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” Martin Luther King Jr.

The Southport School was founded in 1901 on the Gold Coast as an Anglican school for boys from preschool up through year 12. Both a day and boarding school (boarding for boys from year 5 and up), the school has a full academic program taught by a team of dedicated teachers who understand boys and how they learn, and even more importantly, who nurture good relationships based on mutual respect. The courses provide challenges to engage the students and encourage thinking skills, with a low student-to-staff ratio. The school believes in a holistic approach and the importance of a well-rounded education – academic, sports, cultural and spiritual. The school places importance on pastoral care for the boys and has a tradition of welcoming boys of all faiths. Chapels are dynamic weekly services, where the theme may be illustrated through drama, song, puppets or story.

Knowing that younger boys need more attention when away from their home and family, a boarding school was established especially for them. This family-style home provides a stepping stone into the senior school, and they are cared for by the matron as well as the housemaster and his family, who live there too. As the boys grow in the senior school, they then join one of the four senior boarding houses.

Danthonia was pleased to provide a sign system for the school – this sign is just one of them. Prism carved add on letters, as well as a hand sculpted crest and incise carved text all add to the dimensionality of this distinctive hand-crafted sign.
