Blossomwood Winery Sign

BLOSSOMWOOD CIDERY of western Colorado. Here they produce specialty quality hard ciders and perry ('perry' being fermented pear juice) from fruit varieties that are developed specifically for this purpose.

But why the pig? This is Orchard Pig - a Gloucestershire Old Spot, which is a breed that has been traditionally raised in south west England and prized for being a thrifty forager. He is a resident at Blossomwood and his job (along with the other pigs) is to clean up the orchards in winter time. (The boar is called Earl.)

The art of cider making, like many of the old crafts, has a lot more to it than meets the eye. One of the interesting aspects in the creation of good cider (and only one of various ways to do it which is not often used these days) is a process called 'keeving'. This is a way of making naturally sweet and sparkling cider that involves the use of pectin. It ensures a long slow fermentation and lets you bottle the cider while it is still sweet without excessive refermentation later on, which is something you don't want to happen.

The Blossomwood team was looking for a distinctive sign that would brand their farm / business and welcome all visitors to the place. They wanted a handcrafted sign that would be dimensional and classy. The hand sculpted artwork featuring their own Orchard Pig (or is it Earl?) together with the incise carved lettering (both gilded and painted) certainly filled the bill.
