Two Mile Ranch Farm Sign

‘SEE! FROM THE BRAKE the whirring pheasant springs, and mounts exulting on triumphant wings.’ Alexander Pope

The ring-necked pheasant has become a well-known game bird of open fields and farmlands in the Midwest of the USA and southern Canada. Originally a native of China and East Asia, this hardy, wily bird was introduced in the United States in the 1880’s and quickly became popular among hunters. The males are vividly colored, with distinctive white neck rings, while females are a plainer mottled brown color, and both have long, pointed tails. Their rooster-like crowing can be heard from up to a mile away. Nesting in fields and border undergrowth, the female will lay about a dozen eggs. Hatchlings are precocious and are able to fly within two weeks, leaving the nest almost immediately. Most comfortable on the ground, pheasants forage for grains, insects, grains and berries. If startled, they are able to take off quickly, but will only fly short distances to find cover.

The dimensional pheasant on this sign is hand sculpted and the text is incise carved using hand chisels and painted, to make this beautiful farm sign distinctive. It will also last longer than real wood, since it is made of high density urethane (HDU), a closed cell material that has the same weight and density as wood, but is completely waterproof and will last much longer than wood in the elements. The paint is Dulux Weathershield – an Australian designer UV-resistant paint with mineral pigment, so colors will show no significant fading for 8 to 10 years.
