V. Sattui Winery Sign

V. SATTUI WINERY in St. Helena, California, is a historic winery and retail store in the Napa Valley. It was originally established in 1885 by newly arrived Italian winemaker Vittorio Sattui in San Francisco, using grapes from St. Helena. The business thrived until 1920, when Prohibition put an end to the business for several decades, until 1972 when Vittorio’s great grandson, Dario, began his apprenticeships at various Napa Valley wineries with the firm dream of re-establishing V. Sattui Winery. The challenge was raising the money. Dario found the perfect piece of land and began by lease-opting it while living in his VW bus until the existing house on the property was liveable. Eventually, he managed to enlist investors and, in 1975, construction was started on the winery building. Using Vittorio’s hand-corking machine and his original design for the wine labels, he opened for business. Along with the winery, he opened a cheese shop and deli, patterned off of small, family-run delis he had seen in Europe. Slowly the business grew, and by 1985, he was able to build an impressive stone winery, very similar to the late 19th century wineries found in Italy and France. Also that year, he acquired the 34 acre vineyard next to the winery.

Sattui has always been completely involved in all aspects – from growing the grapes to the winemaking to sales, so they have been able to sell directly to customers, exclusively at the winery or online at a fair price. The wines have received numerous awards, and Brooks Painter, at Sattui, was named 2013 Winemaker of the Year at the San Francisco International Wine Competition – the largest competition in the world.

This handcrafted sign for the winery incorporates a dimensional sculpted and gilded logo and artwork with hand incise carved lettering – both in 23kt gold leaf and hand painted. The sign panel was wire brushed and painted high density urethane resembling stained redwood, with the advantage of complete waterproof weatherability for a much longer life than wood.
