The Nixons House Sign

A CLASSIC FIVE POINTED STAR decorates this house sign in Denver, Colorado. One of the most popular images on signs, houses and barns, this familiar star has a long and somewhat mysterious history and has been used throughout the world for thousands of years. Used on countless countries’ flags, the star is connected with military power and war. Supposedly, the stars in American healdry and on the US flag are meant to indicate the heavens. In western culture, the star is often symbolic of ‘stardom’ or fame (have you ever seen the door of a famous actor’s dressing room with a star on it?) Then there are the five pointed stars used on elevators to indicate the ground floor. Police, paramedics and fire crews use stars on their badges, and in sports, the star represents a team’s championships, such as the FIFA World Cup.

Since early times, the five pointed star has been used to represent the human body, since it naturally gives a picture of the head, arms and legs. In early Christian times, it symbolized the five senses (sight, sound, smell, touch and taste) also known as the five wits in Shakespeare’s day. Pythagoras said the five points make up the five elements that make up man: fire, water, air, earth and psyche (energy). In the epic 14th century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the five pointed star on Gawain’s shield features largely in the story. According to the unknown poet, the origin of the star goes back to King Solomon.

Obviously, there is much more you could tell about the star – much of it speculation, but one thing for sure is that it will be around for a long time to come, and it makes a beautiful addition wherever it goes. In this case, it is hand sculpted and gilded with 23kt gold leaf, and it will welcome visitors to the Nixon’s house for many years to come.
