“WHEN YOU ARE safe at home you wish you were having an adventure; when you're having an adventure you wish you were safe at home” - Thornton Wilder

Maybe that is why people are always buying and selling their houses? It is known in the real-estate community that homes and properties with a name fetch higher prices than those with only a street number. You may wonder why such a simple thing could make such a big difference. Well, it’s all to do with presentation and first impressions. Traditionally, it was only wealthy manor houses which were given names. These days, however, more and more folks are bestowing a name on every size and style of home. Of course, a customized house name sign is also necessary!

”Just about every boat owner names their boat. It’s good luck. And plenty of people have pet names for their car. Naming the house though, is something else. A sign on a house indicates that this isn’t just an address, it’s a home and it’s welcoming. Drive around any suburb in Sydney and they can be seen in abundance. Nameplates adorn the wall next to the front door or sit above the letterbox or are recessed into a front fence.” – The Hills Times

In rural areas of Britain and commonwealth countries like Australia, many houses and farms are identified only by name, with numbers either non-existent or simply unused. In the United States, numbers play a greater role in identifying homes

Although naming a house may not be part of the American tradition, house-naming is growing in popularity in the land of the free, too. Besides the financial benefits, there’s a certain personal satisfaction as well. As the Wall Street Journal wrote; ‘House names these days can be like vanity license plates: whimsical attempts by owners to communicate humor and personal identity.’ But an elegant house name requires an elegant house name sign, or the exercise of naming the property is pointless.

If you happen to be considering a name for your house, you might take a look at our Ideas for House Names page. Or maybe your place has a handsome title already. Is the name displayed prominently with a handcrafted sign? A house name in peeling vinyl letters on a decaying mailbox is probably worse than no name at all.

When you are ready to decide for a handcrafted sign simply look through the photos at left, choose a sign design you like and tell us how you would like us to customize it for you!
