Brindabella House Sign

THIS HANDCRAFTED HOUSE SIGN hangs in Moree, New South Wales. It needs no artwork or extra flourishes, but focuses solely on a great 1950’s style typeface called ‘Cocktail Shaker’ by font designer Stuart Sandler of Chicago, Illinois. It’s interesting to find out a bit of the story behind the font, because it turns out that Sandler has designed no less than 400 original typefaces for the graphic design world and is especially known for his retro style typography – especially styles that are inspired by the 1920’s through 1060’s look, an era when letter making was a different world than it is now and a time before computers were around.

Just for fun, here is a very partial list of some of his font names: Roast Beef, Chicken Basket, Refreshment Stand, El Nino, Starlight Hotel, Jumping Bean, Square Meal, Smarty Pants, NY to Los Vegas, Cold Spaghetti, Grilled Cheese, Kentucky Fried, Magic Marker Pro, Fluffy Slacks, Dry Cleaner, and Pie Contest. It’s easy to imagine he has had as much fun naming his fonts as he has had designing them.

The lettering on this sign is hand carved and gilded with 23kt gold. Made of high density urethane (HDU) which is a closed cell foam with the density, weight and feel of wood, it will actually last much longer than wood, since it is waterproof and insect-proof and won’t rot, warp or split like wood. Painted with Dulux Weathershield exterior acrylic paint – an Australian engineered, highly UV-resistant paint, the sign will weather for years without any noticeable fading.
