Heart's Ease Welcome Sign

“I’M THE LITLE ‘HEART’S EASE’! I don't care for pouting skies! If the Butterfly delay, can I therefore, stay away? If the Coward Bumble Bee in his chimney corner stay, I, must resoluter be! Who'll apologize for me? Dear, old fashioned, little flower! Eden is old fashioned, too! Birds are antiquated fellows! Heaven does not change her blue. Nor will I, the little Heart's Ease – ever be induced to do!” Emily Dickinson

This well-loved flower has been the inspiration for many a poet and writer and has been given a host of names, many with quite a romantic slant – Heart’s Delight, Tickle my Fancy, Jack Jump up and Kiss Me, Come and Cuddle me, Three Faces in a Hood, Love in Idleness, Butterfly Flower, Kiss me Quick, Kiss behind the Garden Gate, Three Faces under one Hood, Variegated Violet, and Wild Pansy. Actually, the name ‘pansy’ is from the French ‘pensee’ (thought) which is why Ophelia, in Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ says, “There’s pansies, that’s for thoughts”. In ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Oberon sends Puck to pick ‘a little western flower’ that maidens call ‘love in idleness’. According to Oberon, the juice of the heart’s ease “on sleeping eyelids laid will make a man or woman madly dote upon the next creature that it sees.”

Originally a native of Europe, it was introduced to North America where it spread widely and is most commonly known there as ‘Johnny Jump up’ and this is where the cultivated pansy first had its beginning around 1839. Growing in short grasslands, it is usually found in partial shade. And quite apart from all its romantic and literary fame, the plant has a long history as a prized herb, just as its name would imply. Long recommended for epilepsy, skin diseases, and asthma, it has been used to help respiratory problems such as whooping cough, bronchitis and the common cold, as well as treating rheumatism and speeding up metabolism and last but not least, constipation, acne and dandruff.
