Michelini Wines Sign

“I ALWAYS KNEW that food and wine were vital, with my mother being Italian and a good cook.” Robert Mondavi

Michelini Wines in the Alpine region of northeast Victoria has a long family history behind it. When Emo Michelini immigrated to Australia in 1949 with his young wife and son, they started tobacco farming together with other Italian families, living in a tobacco kiln until they had built a house, while Emo also worked part-time as a butcher. In the 1950’s, he had planted grape vines which thrived beautifully, so that Orlando Wines (in the Barossa Valley of South Australia) asked Emo about developing a commercial vineyard that would supply them with grapes for their sparkling wines.

So began plantings in 1982 which eventually became the first Michelini wines, released in 1997. Now, Emo’s sons Ilario and Dino own and operate the winery and cellar door, specializing in Italian varieties. It is a family affair, with everyone helping with pruning, harvesting and bottling, as well as running the cellar door.

Danthonia was pleased to make a distinctive handcrafted entrance sign for their vineyard, with custom hand painted artwork of their property, including the mountains in the background, as well as dimensional sculpted grapes and leaves in foreground. The text was carved using hand chisels and gilded with 23kt gold leaf, all on an add on panel which is framed by the larger sign, to give a very dimensional aspect to the sign. The same attention to detail on the sign as the Michelini brothers give to their wines – a winning combination.
