“IF PROVIDENCE DID BEARDS DEVISE, To prove the wearers of them wise, A fulsome goat would then, by nature, Excel each other human creature.” Thomas D’Urfey

If we go by this insightful little poem, then judging by his extraordinary beard, the Boer goat is a wise animal indeed. This breed was developed in the early 1900’s in South Africa for meat production. The word ‘Boer’ is Afrikaans for ‘farmer’. It is thought that these were probably bred from indigenous goats of the Bushmen and other tribes, with possible cross-breeding with some Indian and European goats as well.

Since they adapt well to hot, dry climates and have a fast growth rate, Boer goats have become one of the most popular in the world. In the United States, they are found mainly in central west Texas.

Neverdone is an 8 ½ acre farm which specializes in raising their small but choice goat herd – along with three guard dogs (a Maremma sheep dog and two Great Pyrenees – Sofie, Sadie and Bomer respectively). Rich and Jill, the owners, were looking for a distinctive hand crafted look in the entrance sign for their farm. Of course, the Boer goat was the natural focus to welcome visitors to the property. They chose the dimensional look of hand sculpted and painted artwork, together with the elegance of real 23kt gold leaf in the incise carved letters and accent lines. The groove border is carved and painted, and the top trim is an additional final touch to give it that extra depth.
