THE TOP TRIM design dates back to the golden days of traditionally carved wood signs. Wooden 'shingle sign' panels were often glued together with the planks fashioned in a vertical pattern. This method was easy to build but exposed the vulnerable wood end grain on the top of the sign. End grain is not good for holding hanging hardware. In addition month after month water and ice would settle on the top of the sign and as soon as the paint began to wear through water would wick into the end grain and swelling and cracking of the wood sign would begin.

Top trims were used to cover the end grain with a solid plank of flat grain wood. Flat grain was better for hardware hold. The top trim also slowed down the aging process, helped the sign to resist warping and gave the sign a sturdy dimensional look. The top trim component on a wooden shingle sign became the mark of a higher-quality, longer-lasting sign.

Today our sign panels are made of a water-proof HDU/PVC laminate and our top trims are solid HDU. But if you want the look and feel of a quality wood sign - a top trim can help. If your sign needs more dimension to make it stand out - order one of our 'Custom Top Trims'. These trims fit flat top signs only. Trims can be fashioned to fit one sided or two sided signs. You will get a production drawing showing your sign with its Custom Top Trim for approval prior to production.
