Brief history of quarterboard signs
Quarter boards originated in the eighteenth-century, when sailing ships would display their names on wooden signs. Maritime law required that these signs be carved - so if a ship wrecked it could be identified by the carved quarterboard when it was found. When a ship's captain retired he would obtain the quarter board of his boat as a token of his service and would hang it at his home for all to admire.
Eventually, quarterboards became a fashionable decoration for sea-side homes and taverns especially on Cape Cod. People now use quarterboards - all over the world - to name their homes, businesses, bars and boats.
