Danthonia Designs creates all quarterboards from scratch – carving, crafting and painting each one individually, by hand. We do not mass-produce quarterboards by machine, which means that each design we create is unique and tailored to suit the customer's personal taste.

What are quarterboard signs?
Quarter boards originated in the nineteenth-century, when sailing ships would display their names on wooden signs that hung from the deck. Quarterboard signs were always decoratively carved and painted to represent the name or characteristics of the ship or town which it came. When the ship's captain retired and went ashore, he would obtain the quarter board as a token of his service and would hang it at his home for all to admire.
Eventually, quarter boards became a fashionable decoration for sea-side houses, taverns and restaurants. People now use quarter boards to name their homes, businesses, bars and boats, giving them immediate charm and distinct personality.

Danthonia Designs use high-quality paints and materials to produce each quarter board. We have shifted from using natural wood for the strength and quality finish of High-Density Urethane (HDU). HDU quarterboards share the same look and feel of traditional wooden signs, but preserve color for longer and are not prone to chipping, rotting, warping or splitting.
