Tompkins & Somma Law Office Sign

“WE EDUCATED, PRIVILEGED LAWYERS have a professional and moral duty to represent the underrepresented in our society, to ensure that justice exists for all, both legal and economic justice.” Sonia Sotomayor

This classic law office sign in Birmingham, Alabama is a great example of a handcrafted dimensional lawyer sign. The main feature is a well-known symbol – the scales of justice – which have been used on many a law office, courthouse, town hall and government building. In this case, the scales were hand sculpted and painted as an add on, while the main text and subsign letters were incise carved and gilded with 23kt gold leaf. Hand carved accent lines and a complementary colored cove edge added extra depth, while the sign hangs from a Danthonia scroll hanger, which looks exactly like old fashioned wrought iron, but is really sturdy powder coated aluminium, engineered for the strongest wind event.

The sign itself is constructed of HDU (high density urethane) which is a closed cell substrate that is the same density, weight and feel as wood, but has the advantage of being much longer lasting, since it is completely waterproof and insect-proof and will not warp, split or rot like wood will do over time. The paints are top of the line exterior acrylics, highly UV resistant and engineered in Australia where the sun can be fierce – so it will not show any noticeable fading for at least ten years. Eye bolts and quick links are stainless steel, so will never rust.
