Dorrigo Town Welcome Sign

“KEEP CLOSE to Nature's heart... and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.” - John Muir

Dorrigo is the gateway to the Dorrigo National Park, part of the Gondwana rainforests. This is the name given collectively to over fifty remnant rainforests in New South Wales and South-eastern Queensland, protected and recognized with World Heritage status. They form the most extensive areas of diverse rainforest to be found anywhere in the world. The forests are ancient and provide an important window into the past.

These signs are small in keeping with the size of the community and the space available between the road and the forest margin. However, what they lack in size they make up for in aesthetics. The logo is added on for a layered look and the Dorrigo letters are carved to give extra dimensionality. As a final touch there is a 23kt gold gilded groove around the edge.

The signs are just perfect to welcome the many people who come here to experience nature up close. There are over 120 species of birds recorded in the area in addition to red-necked pademelons, possums and reptiles.

But Dorrigo isn’t always a paradise. The rains and storms that water the lush forests and keep the clear creeks and the sparkling waterfalls flowing can turn fierce. Dorrigo holds the record for the highest daily rainfall ever recorded in NSW Australia. 809.2 millimeters (31.86 inches) fell in one 24 hour period! Good thing our Danthonia signs are waterproof.

So, by all means, break clear away once in a while and enjoy the mountains, forests and streams. But if you visit Dorrigo remember to keep a weather eye open.
