Wood Winery Sign

“WINE IS THE MOST HEALTHFUL and most hygienic of beverages.” Louis Pasteur

This family-owned winery, formerly known as ‘Wild Wood Vineyard & Winery’, is a boutique business on 80 acres of vineyards right by Avila Beach, California, at the base of the Cuesta Grade in San Luis Obispo. Established in 1999, it combines fine wines with fine art – including pottery, gourmet foods and original art. Craig Wood is the winemaker, who specializes in handcrafted wines from his own vineyard along with Cabernet Sauvigon, Pinot Noir, Syran and Italian wines. This is a kid-friendly, dog-friendly, casual place where you can sit on the outside patio and watch the beach – making it live up to its catchword ‘Where the Ocean Meets the Vines’.

In making a sign for Wood Winery, we had fun dimensionalizing their hand-drawn logo – a perfect fit for our sculptors to carve using gouges and chisels. In this case, we used fairly thick HDU (high density urethane) to give it a chunky, very 3D look and details were painted using Liquitex Artist acrylics. The sign panel itself was made of HDU (a closed cell material comparable in weight and density to wood, but with longer lasting qualities since it is completely waterproof – a special plus for a seaside sign.) This was laminated to a sturdy PVC backing for added stability. The text was incise carved and gilded with 23kt gold leaf. All in all, it was a great match – a handcrafted sign for a winery that produces handcrafted wine and artwork. Some things just work out right.
