TIMBS PHARMACY in Glen Innes, New South Wales, is one of the increasingly rare local country chemists out there doing a great service for the community. This town, located in the Northern Tablelands, boasts a population of around 5,000 according to the last census. Its interesting history can be seen in the Land of the Beardies History Museum with its great collection of biographical and historical records. The center of a tin mining boom in the late 19th century, Glen Innes also benefited when the railway from Sydney opened here in 1884, and many of the beautiful buildings reflect this time of prosperity. Quite a few of these buildings are federation architecture (from the turn of the century) and are painted in traditional federation colors and are on the Register of the National Estate.

The pharmacy chose the iconic symbol of the mortar and pestle – objects that date all the way back to around 35,000 BC. Even the bible makes mention of these:”“Though you pound a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain, Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.” (Proverbs 27:22). Traditionally used in pharmacies to crush various ingredients in preparation of prescriptions, the mortar and pestle is still used today for grinding up pills to speed up absorption, etc.

Here, the mortar and pestle has been hand sculpted and painted as a dimensional add on, while the letters and groove border have been incise carved using hand chisels and gilded with 23kt gold. With carefully chosen colors, it matches beautifully with one of Glen Innes’ beautifully restored buildings.
